Have you hugged your Land Conservancy lately? · Sep 9 by Kurt Peterson

A few things to ponder:

  • The American Farmland Trust reports that 70 percent of prime or unique farmland in the US is now in the path of rapid development.
  • In the Chesapeake Basin alone, between the years of 1950-1980, the percent of land used for residential and commercial purposes increased nearly 180% while population increased about 50%.*
  • Based upon a current study in Maryland 10,000 acres of forest and farmland were lost. If these trends continue, Maryland could use as much land for development in the next 25 years as it has used in the entire history of the state.*

The most recent issue of Backpacker magazine rated the best campsites in America and named the spectacular valley view from the Overmountain Shelter along the Appalachian Trail in NC as the prettiest valley in America. But get there soon as it’s slated to be filled with a development of vacation homes.

So I ask, have you hugged your land conservancy lately?
