Shackleford Island Backpacking Trip
Join us for 3 days and 2 nights on a remote island that is part of Cape Lookout National Seashore. We will meet at the West Broad St. location at 8am on Friday November 12th. Then, we'll carpool down to the marina, a 6 hour drive. This is a short backpacking trip of 400-600 yards with extensive dayhiking options. Expect to be dropped off by boat in the warm, crystal clear water and walk 200 yards to shore.
Trip highlights include: 140 wild horses, some of the best beachcombing on the Eastern United States, fantastic birding of song and shore birds during fall migration and a sunset quarter moon to make the evening more special. Our campsite is at the remote eastern end of the island, and at the island’s narrowest point. This allows easy walks of about 10 minutes from sound beaches to ocean beaches, and close to the spectacular Cape Lookout Lighthouse.
We will provide both evening meals, large tarp community area, bird and shell books (our trip leader is a Master Naturalist). You will need to bring water, dayhiking gear, a fleece jacket. Other gear needs to be announced at the time of sign up we will provide you with a trip list. This is a great family trip and is the most popular trip. SPRUCE KNOB HIGH MEADOWS . MODERATE 13 MILES
This shall be a most interesting hike by any measure and is one of the classic hikes in West Virginia. We will leave from the highest mountain in West Virginia on day 1 , and descend through high meadows to an open ridge overlooking the steep valley of Seneca Creek. On day 2 we will descend to , and follow Seneca creek up it's semi-open valley to it's headwaters . After leaving our backpacking gear at the vehicles , we left there on day 1 , those still having energy , will have the chance to dayhike from there into an extensive system of seldom seen trailess meadows and look for bears usually feeding extesively prior to hibernation .
The Dayhike on day 2 is with your trip leader , a master naturalist.....and is a very unique environment with much to see...binoculars suggested .
