Join us for a short backpacking trip of under 2 miles each day , following a small stream off trail to it's junction with a larger stream that will be followed back up to a trail crossing. Camp under the 1/2 moon and along rarely seen streamside meadows. This is not a trip for the seasoned backpacker , but for families , nature lovers and beginning backpackers .As with all our backpacking trips , an evening dayhike from our base camp will be offered. There should be early Fall color in the maples and aspens , and coyotes calling to provide evening entertainment .
We run trips to unique and very special places ! All of our trips are beginner freiendly. They are not physical workouts , but enjoyable experiences in beautiful places with a focus on building your outdoor and nature skills. All trips will have a meeting point somewhere along the route . You will be called at least twice to go over weather and trip gear. 1 night trips are $45 which covers your evening meal . 2 night trips to Shackelford Island are $75 which covers 2 evening meals and your boat transport . More information is available at john@brms.com. or 434-977-1397 X 331 .
Oct 02, 2010 - Oct 03, 2010   • GETTING STARTED IN THE OUTDOORS . MOUNTAIN SKILLS . CLASS TRIP
The Reward for attending 3 or more of our September classes is an almost free class trip to the 4000' high , tundra like open grasslands of Dolly Sods North in West Virginia. Everyone will get a chance to practice everything learned in class , and navigation on the off-trail hike out will be totally done by class members and we will "follow". We always practice "leave no trace " principles , and this pristine area will show you why they are so important.
You will transport yourself and we will set up ride sharing if desired. The fee if $25 , but you will get some cool free gear..the trip leader has been backpacking extensively for over 40 years , and has done over 100 trips in this remote area of Canyons and High Plains. Rain will move this trip to Spring 2011 .
Oct 23, 2010 - Oct 24, 2010   • SPRUCE KNOB HIGH MEADOWS . MODERATE 13 MILES
This shall be a most interesting hike by any measure and is one of the classic hikes in West Virginia. We will leave from the highest mountain in West Virginia on day 1 , and descend through high meadows to an open ridge overlooking the steep valley of Seneca Creek. On day 2 we will descend to , and follow Seneca creek up it's semi-open valley to it's headwaters . After leaving our backpacking gear at the vehicles , we left there on day 1 , those still having energy , will have the chance to dayhike from there into an extensive system of seldom seen trailess meadows and look for bears usually feeding extesively prior to hibernation .
The Dayhike on day 2 is with your trip leader , a master naturalist.....and is a very unique environment with much to see...binoculars suggested .
Nov 19, 2010 - Nov 21, 2010   • FALL SHACKELFORD ISLAND TRIP
Spend 3 days and 2 nights on a remote island off the coast of North Carolina , with some of the best seashells , fall migration birding and views on the east coast . Add 140 wild horses and the full moon and you can see why this has been our most popular trip for 15 years. Expect to be dropped off in knee deep , crystal clear warm water and backpack to shore . Campsites abound within 100-400 yards , and we are at the narrow point of the island , so from sound beaches to ocean beaches is less than 10 minutes..Great kids trip, and there will be fleece jacket prize for the best beach find , as voted on by the group at dinner saturday night .
Bring Daypacks too , as this is really beach camping and dayhiking . This trip will fill fast. It is a 7 hour drive from Charlottesville , and many will go down and stay in Historic Beaufort the night before... Run away from work and take the Cedar Island ferry to Ocracoke on your way slowly home ....information john 434-977-1397 x 331 or john@brms.com
